M-i-c, k-ey, M-o-u-s-e!  OK, I will now have that song stuck in my head all day, but I couldn’t resist given today’s Muse… Disney!

The trick with modelling cake pops after characters that are so well known, is that they have such distinct features to replicate. These bakers did that, and more, really capturing the essence of Disney in some wonderfully original creations!

Show the bakers some love, with some “likes”.  Also, read the captions carefully… there’s some tutorials sprinkled in there… enjoy!

I’m not sure who started the MUSTACHE trend, but they sure are everywhere… accessories, clothing, baby products (Mustachifier, anyone?), and kitchen gadgets like this Crustache sandwich mustache cutter, which is just too funny. Like I said, they’re everywhere!

So it only makes sense that mustaches have bristled their way into the cake pop world.  The great thing about mustache cake pops is that not only are they a tasty treat, but they make the best photo prop!

These crafty bakers have made their ‘stashes the star of the party!

Growing up, I wasn’t much of a girly-girl. I was more of a tomboy, so pink wasn’t really my thing.  Even now, I don’t wear pink very often… but… I love using it in baking!

Pink looks awesome alongside so many other colors, and pairs well with animal print patterns. Hot pink in particular gives such an awesome punch of pizzazz, and is great to use as an accent color.

Check out these bakers who’s pops are pretty in pink!

I love when holidays roll around.  There’s no better excuse to kick back and relax with family enjoying good food and fun times.  I also love seeing how you bakers interpret the theme into your desserts!

Fourth of July is tomorrow, a Wednesday – an odd day for a major holiday.  Some people fired up their grills last weekend, some are celebrating tomorrow, and I bet some are even getting together this coming weekend as well.  Whenever you decide to get your Fourth on, here are some awesome treats paying homage to the Stars & Stripes.

Alcohol, cake pops, Cocktails

Show your ID to the bouncer and pull up a bar stool, these cake pops are not for kids!

While browsing Instagram last week, and I came across the most interesting picture from Cake Ball Love captioned as “shots!”…

What, what’s this?  Shots + cake balls? Immediately intrigued, I dashed to their Facebook page hoping to find more pictures… wow, check these out:

I got in touch with Pam from Cake Ball Love and asked if she could share some deets on her incredibly inventive idea.  Here’s what she told me…

  • I got the idea from a wedding event I recently went to. Another catering company was doing something similar, but with artisan chocolates.  My friends and I thought it would be such a great thing to do with cake balls! Determining flavor combinations was a new level of fun for me. I’m so driven by taste and flavor profiles. One of the issues I came across was that most of the liquor ideas I had to pair with my Chocolate Bliss cake balls were cream based and that sounded like a recipe for disaster. Cream liquors sitting out on a warm day- ew. So for the Urban Styles Summer Event, I finally came to three choices: Chocolate Bliss with Peppermint Schnapps, Lemon Zest with Blueberry Stoli, and Banana Bread with Butterscotch Schnapps (my fav). All were a hit! I’m really excited to come up with new combinations!  Oooh, maybe Amaretto or frangelico with chocolate or vanilla! Nom!

How awesome is that? I’m trying to decide if I’d squeeze the pipette to inject the shot into the cake ball, or if I’d pull it out, drink it straight and use the cake ball as a chaser… hmmm, decisions 😉

Then I got to wondering… what other alcohol-cake pop possibilities are out there?  To my surprise… there are quite a few!

Red velvet cake pops infused with Remy Martin, a champagne cognac. (click pic for 2 other flavors)

What flavors would you want to try?

BBQ, cake pops, Father's Day, Golf, Grilling

So it seems Father’s Day treats revolve around three main themes: sports, ties and grilling.

I was about to label them “cliche”, but as I thought about it, my dear Dad definitely falls into the sports and grilling categories… so I guess they’re true after all 🙂 He wears a tie to church, but I wouldn’t classify him as a “tie guy”.

go Eagles!

With Father’s Day just 5 days away, those three themes have been popping up throughout the cake pop community. It was so hard to choose one cool golf cake pop from another, but I narrowed it down to these awesome selections…

Sports season is in full swing!  Ice hockey and basketball are in playoff mode and baseball is well underway.

So, it’s no surprise that sports-themed cake pops are popping up everywhere! And what is really cool, is that there are more than the typical major league sports… cake poppers are crafting pops from a variety of sports!

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. I am so impressed, over and over again, by the talent of you cake poppers. Every time I go online and browse around, I nearly fall out of my chair at the degree of skill you all apply to your cake pop creations!

As I was looking around today, an incredible picture of some greyhound cake pops caught my eye (pictured below), and it struck me that I had been seeing quite a few dog cake pops recently.

Growing up, my family always had a dog… we had Dusty, a rust-colored Golden Retreiver, then Lady, a German Sheppard/Beagle/Collie mix, who for some reason I always called Poodle.  Thinking of them brought back such fond memories, I had to give today’s theme to the dogs!

For today’s post, I had so many possible titles in mind, but it was too hard to choose…

  • Must Love Dogs (one of my fav’ “chick flicks”)
  • Who Let The Dogs Out?
  • Dog Days of Summer
  • It’s a Dog-Eat-Dog World

I could go on for days, haha.  In the meantime, check out these “pupper-ific” cake pops!  Each picture is linked to the baker’s Facebook page, so you can show them some love & “likes”!

Tuesday Muse-day: Painted Pops!

cake pops, How to Paint Cake Pops, Luster Dust, Painted Cake Pops, Painting Chocolate

Since cake pops “popped” on to the baking scene, they have taken on several forms.  There’s the basic pop, dipped in one color of chocolate and you’re done.  But for the more adventurous bakers, cake pops are getting fancy… sprinkled, drizzled, marbled, sculpted.  More and more, I’m seeing bakers turn their pops into an art form, literally, by painting on the detail!

One cake popper leading the painting pack is Lou Lou P’s Delights. Every time I see a new post of theirs, I’m absolutely blown away!  In fact, it was their latest pop (below) that inspired this post today… a cake pop rendition of The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Painting cake pops can take them to the next level by adding such intricate details as eyelashes, facial features, and more.  Look how Cake Pop Princess turned a marbled cake pop into the Cheshire Cat from Alice and Wonderland by painting on it’s facial features…

Kiss And Bake Up is yet another talented cake pop painter.  The amount of detail in these Dia de los Muertos cake pops is amazing!  I can’t imagine how much time it took, but I do know that I could never bring myself to eat something so beautiful (even though that defeats the purpose of edible treats, lol).

So… how can you start painting your pops?  Two words: luster dust.

One luster dust technique is called dry brushing.  Simply put, you use a dry, food-safe paint brush, dip it in the luster dust, and start painting.  Dry brushing is kind of like eye shadow… you can use a little to enhance features, perhaps adding rosy cheeks to people cake pops, or you can use more to make dramatic statements, like these gold hearts.  Be sure that there is no moisture on your pop or brush, or it will ruin the soft look to it, and it will dry in clumps.

The other technique is called wet brushing. As the name implies, this method involves adding liquid to the luster dust to give you more of a paint-like medium to work with.  Here, April C. from Rhubarb and Rose uses a fine tipped brush to add detailed facial features to their Rhinna cake pop.

For best results, use a liquid with high alcohol content.  The idea here is that the alcohol evaporates and the luster dust dries to the pop.

Regular, unflavored vodka is favored by most bakers.  Flavored alcohols tend to leave a sticky residue behind.  Lemon extract is also effective, however, this may add a hint of flavor depending how much you use.  If you’re in the UK, Rhubarb & Rose recommends using rejuvenator spirit, a food grade iso-propyl alcohol.

To mix your “luster paint”:

  • Use a small bowl with a small surface… the larger the surface, the mixture will spread out and evaporate before you get to painting. A small painter’s palette works great.
  • Use an eye-dropper to add alcohol to the luster dust – you really don’t need all that much.  You can always add a few drops more to get the consistency you desire, however, it’s very hard to go backwards from over-saturated luster dust.
  • Mix the alcohol and luster dust together. You’ll want it to have a smooth, blended consistency.  If you’re getting lumps, add a drop of alcohol and keep mixing.
  • Once applied, the “luster paint” will dry in just a few minutes.
  • Try not to handle the painted areas to heavily, as it can smudge when touched.

Happy painting!
